Chapter 01:Why I Joined Nissan

A Desire to Work More Globally
- Nissan Offered That Environment

I previously worked for a Japanese electrical equipment and electronic parts manufacturer, specializing in technical sales of cutting tools for automotive and machine tool industries. I regularly traveled overseas bases, so I had some experience working in a global environment. However, I often felt that “conveying the Japanese way overseas” was a one-way process. I wanted a workplace where I could engage in more mutual, dynamic exchanges with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, both inside and outside the company, on a daily basis.

Since studying international politics at university, I have been drawn to the automotive industry because of its significant social and economic impact, as well as its broad industrial base. Many of my previous clients were car manufacturers, so I was already familiar with the industry. When I learned that Nissan offers a truly global environment and that many female employees serve as role models for career development, I was deeply motivated to join the company.

Chapter 02:My Role and Responsibilities

Getting Closer to Manufacturing Sites
- Transitioning from Sales to Purchasing

When I transferred to Nissan, I made a career shift from sales to purchasing. I wanted to work in a role that was “close to manufacturing sites.” In my previous job, I proposed ways to improve the productivity of customers’ manufacturing processes, focusing on cutting tools. However, in a vehicle manufacturer’s sales department, the sense of distance from actual production sites could be quite large.

In contrast, working in the purchasing department allows me to maintain close relationships with suppliers’ manufacturing sites, which I find very fulfilling. I can also leverage the knowledge and data analysis skills I gained in sales regarding manufacturing processes and quality. However, purchasing requires a medium- to long-term perspective—considering supplier selection and planning from vehicle concept and release through to parts procurement for current models. Facing this different sense of time and scope is a challenging but rewarding experience.

Chapter 03:Career Growth

Collaborating Closely with Suppliers
to Achieve the Best Results

My current role involves procuring electronic components related to EV batteries and inverters, as well as developing procurement strategies to ensure stable supply of semiconductors. I am responsible not only for selecting suppliers during new vehicle development but also for maintaining a stable supply chain for parts already on the market.

Together with our suppliers, we continuously experiment with timing and manufacturing methods to achieve optimal results for both sides. I find working in a “Position close to manufacturing sites” very fulfilling, as it aligns with the role I envisioned.

Since automotive parts and materials are closely linked to industries worldwide, our operations and suppliers are often affected by policy changes and natural disasters in other countries. While not always positive, this environment stimulates me—allowing me to feel that “my work is connected to the world.”

Chapter 04:My Future Aspirations

The Power of Diversity - Thriving Regardless of Age,
Nationality, or Gender

Our procurement division has about 600 members in Japan alone, with employees from diverse nationalities and backgrounds. It’s a truly global environment I had been seeking. Nissan’s culture of diversity is more extensive than I initially imagined, and everyone is encouraged to express and propose ideas regardless of age, nationality, or gender. If someone wishes, they are given opportunities to challenge themselves. Clear communication of ideas and intentions is key to enjoying meaningful work here.

In terms of work styles, I see that various systems—such as paid leave, flextime, and remote work—are widely available and actively used by many employees. I myself once balanced caring for my parents with work, and my boss and colleagues supported me generously, saying, “Prioritize your family when needed.” This flexibility and support are among Nissan’s many attractive qualities.
